Chocolate Cut Out Cookies

Happy Halloween! Try these chewy chocolate cookies with a glass of milk this Halloween as a treat. If you are feeling creative decorate these cookies with royal icing (see recipe below). The white icing really stands out against the dark cookie, but feel free to use coloured icing. I made these dog bone shaped cookies for the opening of a friend’s doggie daycare, and they were a success. The dough can become quite sticky as you roll it out so make sure to use enough flour.

Chocolate Cut Out Cookies

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 1/4 tsp baking powder

1/8 tsp salt

3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened

1 cup white sugar

1 egg


  1. Sift together the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg.
  3. Gradually stir in the sifted ingredients to form a soft dough. Kneed dough a few times to create a ball. Divide dough into 2 pieces, flatten and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
  4. Preheat oven to 375° F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one ball of dough at a time to 1/8 inch in thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters.
  5. Place cookies 1 1/2 inches apart onto cookie sheets. Bake for 10 minutes. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

1 cup icing sugar

1 tbsp milk

1/4 tsp vanilla or almond extract


  1. In a small bowl, beat together icing sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in vanilla or almond extract until icing is smooth and glossy. If icing is too thick, add more milk.
